Zelda: Ocarina of Time Set for Official Switch 2 Revival as Fan Remake Project Comes to an End

Nintendo has finally given fans of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time something they have been waiting years to hear. During its latest Nintendo Direct presentation, the company confirmed that the beloved Nintendo 64 classic is returning in an official form for the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release currently planned for 2026.

The announcement marks one of Nintendo’s most significant Zelda reveals in recent years and could bring one of gaming’s most iconic adventures to a new generation of players.

    Nintendo’s Legendary Adventure Returns

Originally released in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever created. The game introduced millions of players to Link’s journey through Hyrule and helped define the action adventure genre for decades to come.

While Nintendo has re released the title on several platforms over the years, fans have long hoped for a modern remake featuring updated visuals, improved gameplay systems, and enhanced performance.

That dream now appears closer than ever.

Although Nintendo has not revealed gameplay footage yet, the company confirmed that a new version of Ocarina of Time is in development for Switch 2 and is expected to launch sometime in 2026.

Fan Made Unreal Engine Remake Officially Ends Development

The official announcement has also led to the end of one of the gaming community’s most popular fan projects.

Developer CryZENx, known for creating an ambitious Unreal Engine recreation of Ocarina of Time, announced that work on the project will no longer continue.

Interestingly, the decision was not caused by legal action from Nintendo.

According to CryZENx, Nintendo never issued a cease and desist order or requested the project be removed. Instead, the developer felt there was little reason to continue producing an unofficial remake now that Nintendo is building its own version.

The Unreal Engine project had gained a large following over the years, with playable demos showcasing iconic locations, characters, and dungeons from the original game using modern graphics technology.

Existing demo versions will remain available for fans who want to experience the project.

A Small Wording Change Has Fans Talking

One detail from Nintendo’s announcement has sparked discussion across the gaming community.

Initially, Nintendo reportedly described the project as a “full remake” featuring updated visuals and redesigned characters. However, later references to the game used the word “reborn” instead.

While the change may seem minor, some fans believe it could indicate that Nintendo is still finalizing the scope of the project.

Whether the game becomes a complete ground up remake or a modernized remaster remains unclear at this stage.

Until gameplay footage is revealed, questions about the scale of the project are likely to continue.

    What Players Can Expect

Nintendo has yet to confirm specific features, but many fans expect the Switch 2 version to include:

    • Enhanced graphics and visual effects
    • Improved frame rates
    • Updated character models
    • Modernized controls
    • Faster loading times
    • New quality of life improvements

Given the increased power of the Nintendo Switch 2, expectations are high for a version that respects the original while taking advantage of modern hardware capabilities.

    What’s Next for CryZENx?

Although the Unreal Engine version of Ocarina of Time has reached its conclusion, CryZENx appears ready to move on to a new Zelda inspired project.

The developer has hinted that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess could become the next focus for future fan created work.

No official details have been confirmed, but the possibility has already generated excitement among longtime Zelda fans.

    Looking Ahead to 2026

Nintendo’s decision to revisit Ocarina of Time demonstrates the enduring popularity of one of gaming’s most influential titles. With an official Switch 2 release now on the horizon, fans may finally get the modern version they have been requesting for years.

As Nintendo reveals more details in the months ahead, Ocarina of Time is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Switch 2 releases currently in development.
