Nintendo has officially announced a global price increase for its popular Nintendo Switch 2 console, with new pricing set to take effect starting September 2026.

The company confirmed that the Switch 2 price in the United States will rise from $449.99 to $499.99, while most European countries will see the price increase from €469.99 to €499.99.

Nintendo also stated that updated pricing for the United Kingdom will be revealed later, as the console currently sells for £395.99.

    Nintendo Apologises to Customers

In its official statement, Nintendo apologized to customers for the increase and explained that changing global market conditions played a major role in the decision.

The company said it “sincerely apologises” for the impact these adjustments may have on consumers and thanked customers for their understanding.

    Japan Also Facing Price Changes

Nintendo additionally confirmed price increases in Japan, where several products are expected to become more expensive later this month.

The following products are reportedly affected:

    • Japanese language edition of the Switch 2
    • Original Nintendo Switch models
    • Nintendo online subscription services

Historically, gaming products and subscriptions in Japan have been priced lower than in international markets, but the company now appears to be adjusting prices globally.

    Strong Sales Despite Price Hike

Despite the increase, Nintendo revealed that the Switch 2 continues to perform extremely well commercially.

    According to the company:

    • Nearly 20 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold since launch
    • Nintendo recorded profits of 424 billion yen (approximately $2.7 billion)
    • Annual profits increased by 52% compared to the previous year

The strong demand suggests that Nintendo remains one of the leading forces in the gaming industry even amid rising costs.

    Why Are Console Prices Increasing?

The gaming industry has recently faced growing pressure from hardware shortages and rising manufacturing expenses.

One of the biggest issues involves:

    • RAM memory shortages
    • Storage component price increases
    • High global demand for AI infrastructure

Many of the same components used in gaming consoles are also required for artificial intelligence data centers, creating supply shortages and driving prices upward.

    Industry analysts also point to:

    • Global economic uncertainty
    • Trade tensions and tariffs
    • Ongoing geopolitical conflicts affecting supply chains

These factors have impacted major technology and gaming companies worldwide.

Sony and Other Companies Also Raising Prices

Nintendo is not alone in adjusting prices. Earlier this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced another price increase for the PlayStation 5 in multiple regions.

Sony cited ongoing economic pressures and manufacturing costs as key reasons behind the adjustment.

Meanwhile, gaming company Valve Corporation has reportedly delayed the release of its next-generation gaming hardware due to similar market challenges.

Gaming Industry Facing a New Reality

The latest announcements reflect a broader trend across the gaming and tech industries, where rising production costs and AI driven hardware demand are reshaping pricing strategies.

As companies compete for semiconductor supply and advanced components, consumers may continue seeing higher prices across gaming consoles, GPUs, smartphones, and other electronics throughout 2026.

    Conclusion

Nintendo’s Switch 2 price increase highlights the growing financial pressure facing the gaming industry. While demand for gaming hardware remains strong, rising production costs and supply chain challenges are forcing major companies to rethink pricing worldwide.
